AI-Native API Gateway for Large-Scale AI Workloads

Higress is an open-source, AI-native API gateway developed by Alibaba Cloud and maintained as a Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) sandbox project. Built on Envoy and Istio, it extends traditional API gateway capabilities to address the unique demands of AI workloads, including large language model (LLM) proxying, token rate limiting, content safety enforcement, caching, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server hosting. Its architecture is designed to handle high-throughput scenarios with minimal latency, making it suitable for production environments where AI services operate at scale.

Originally developed within Alibaba to resolve issues such as long-connection disruptions during gateway reloads and suboptimal load balancing for gRPC and Dubbo protocols, Higress has evolved into a vendor-neutral solution adopted across industries. It supports over 100 mainstream LLM providers, both domestic and international, and integrates seamlessly with Kubernetes environments as an ingress controller or microservice gateway. The project’s permissive Apache 2.0 license ensures broad accessibility for developers and enterprises.

Higress’s core innovation lies in its AI-native design, where AI-specific requirements—such as model routing, token management, and content moderation—are treated as first-class concerns. Unlike traditional gateways, it introduces specialized features tailored for AI workflows, such as semantic caching, multi-model load balancing with fallback mechanisms, and fine-grained observability for AI operations. These capabilities are implemented through a plugin architecture that leverages WebAssembly (Wasm) for extensibility, allowing developers to write plugins in Go, Rust, or JavaScript while ensuring memory safety through sandbox isolation.

How It Works

Higress operates as a cloud-native API gateway with a modular architecture centered around Envoy’s proxy capabilities and Istio’s service mesh features. Its design prioritizes performance, scalability, and ease of extension, making it adaptable to both AI-specific and general-purpose use cases. Key components include the Envoy proxy for traffic management, Istio for service mesh integration, and a plugin system for custom logic.

Istio integration provides advanced service mesh features such as mutual TLS, traffic splitting, and observability. The plugin system allows for the addition of custom logic, such as AI-specific routing, authentication, or rate limiting, without modifying the core gateway code. Plugins are written in Wasm and can be updated independently, enabling traffic-lossless hot reloading—a feature particularly valuable for AI workloads where downtime is unacceptable.

Higress also supports the Gateway API standard, enabling smooth migration from traditional Kubernetes Ingress controllers like NGINX. Compared to NGINX, Higress reduces resource overhead by up to 70% and accelerates route change propagation by a factor of ten, making it more efficient for large-scale deployments.

It can be deployed as a standalone service using Docker or integrated into Kubernetes clusters via Helm charts. The project provides regional Docker image mirrors to minimize latency for global deployments, and its out-of-the-box console offers a user-friendly interface for configuration and monitoring. Support for Let’s Encrypt ensures automatic certificate management, reducing operational overhead for developers.

AI Gateway for LLM Providers

It supports over 100 models, including domestic and international providers such as Tongyi Qianwen, Bailian, and OpenAI. By standardizing model access, Higress enables developers to switch between providers without modifying application logic, while features like token rate limiting and caching optimize cost and performance.

The model-router plugin dynamically selects the optimal model based on predefined rules, ensuring consistent performance and cost efficiency.

Higress also addresses AI-specific challenges such as token management and content safety. The token-rate-limiter plugin enforces quotas to prevent cost overruns, while the ai-security-guard plugin filters sensitive or inappropriate content in both input and output streams.

MCP Server Hosting for AI Agents

Higress extends its capabilities to host MCP servers, enabling AI agents to interact with external tools and services through a standardized protocol. Higress simplifies this process by providing a plugin mechanism for hosting MCP servers, along with tools like openapi-to-mcp for converting OpenAPI specifications into MCP endpoints.

Hosting MCP servers on Higress offers several advantages. Unified authentication and authorization mechanisms ensure secure access control, while fine-grained rate limiting prevents abuse of tool endpoints. Comprehensive audit logs and rich observability features provide visibility into tool usage patterns, and dynamic updates allow for configuration changes without disrupting active connections.

These deployments demonstrate Higress’s ability to handle high-volume AI workloads while maintaining stability and performance.

Kubernetes Ingress Controller and Microservice Gateway

Beyond AI-specific use cases, Higress functions as a feature-rich Kubernetes ingress controller and microservice gateway. It supports the Gateway API standard, allowing for gradual migration from legacy Ingress controllers like NGINX. Compatibility with NGINX annotations ensures minimal disruption during transitions, while reduced resource overhead and faster route propagation improve efficiency in large-scale environments.

As a microservice gateway, Higress integrates with popular service registries such as Nacos, ZooKeeper, Consul, and Eureka to discover and route traffic to backend services. Compared to traditional Java-based microservice gateways, Higress’s Envoy-based architecture delivers lower latency and reduced resource consumption, making it suitable for high-throughput environments.

Higress’s security features further enhance its suitability for enterprise deployments. It supports multiple authentication strategies, including key-auth, HMAC, JWT, basic-auth, and OIDC, ensuring flexible access control. WAF (Web Application Firewall) capabilities protect against common web vulnerabilities, while IP and cookie-based rate limiting mitigate abuse.

Security Gateway for AI and Traditional Workloads

Higress’s security capabilities extend beyond authentication and rate limiting to include content safety and compliance enforcement. This is especially important for AI services interacting with external models, where data privacy and safety are critical concerns.

For traditional workloads, Higress provides a robust security gateway with WAF protection, DDoS mitigation, and fine-grained access controls. Its compatibility with Gateway API and Ingress standards ensures seamless integration with existing Kubernetes security policies. Additionally, Higress’s support for Let’s Encrypt simplifies certificate management, reducing operational complexity for developers deploying secure APIs.

For example, the introduction of immutable plugin snapshots ensures that deployed plugins can be verified for integrity, reducing the risk of supply chain attacks.

AI-Specific Functionality

Higress introduces several AI-native features that differentiate it from traditional API gateways.

  • Unified LLM Protocol Support: Higress standardizes access to over 100 LLM providers, abstracting differences in API protocols and authentication. This allows developers to switch between providers without modifying application code, while features like token rate limiting and caching optimize cost and performance.
  • Token Rate Limiting: The token-rate-limiter plugin enforces per-user or per-application token quotas, preventing cost overruns and managing usage patterns. This is particularly valuable for enterprises deploying AI services at scale.
