How Helicone Works
Helicone is an open-source LLM observability platform designed to simplify monitoring, debugging, and optimization of large language model interactions. It operates as an AI Gateway and proxy, enabling developers to log, trace, and analyze LLM requests through a one-line integration.
At its core, Helicone functions as a unified API layer that abstracts access to over 100 AI models from providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others. By routing requests through Helicone’s gateway, users can manage API keys centrally, reducing complexity and improving security. The platform automatically logs all requests, providing real-time visibility into model performance, costs, and latency.
Helicone’s architecture consists of five primary services: a Next.js-based frontend, a Cloudflare Workers-based proxy for logging, a dedicated server (Express + Tsoa) for log collection, Supabase for database and authentication, and ClickHouse for analytics. Additionally, Minio is used for object storage of logs. This modular design ensures scalability and flexibility, whether deployed via Docker, Helm, or self-hosted environments.
Users can clone the repository, configure environment variables, and start services locally or in production. Manual deployment is discouraged in favor of automated methods to ensure consistency and reliability.
The platform integrates seamlessly with popular LLM frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, and Semantic Kernel, as well as inference providers like Ollama, AWS Bedrock, and Groq.
Helicone’s observability features include cost and latency tracking, prompt management, and session-level analytics. Users can inspect traces, debug workflows, and export metrics to tools like PostHog for custom dashboards. The platform also supports prompt versioning, enabling teams to iterate on prompts without redeploying code, and provides a playground for rapid testing of models and parameters.
Use Cases
Helicone addresses critical challenges in LLM development, including cost management, performance optimization, and debugging. By centralizing API key management, it eliminates the need to handle multiple provider keys, reducing operational overhead. The unified API gateway also enables intelligent routing and automatic fallbacks, ensuring resilience during provider outages.
Features like session-level metrics, geographic filtering, and timezone-aware timestamps help teams analyze usage patterns, identify bottlenecks, and optimize resource allocation.
The platform’s prompt management system allows developers to version, test, and deploy prompts dynamically. Saved prompts can be referenced by ID in API calls, enabling real-time updates without code changes.
Helicone also supports advanced use cases such as fine-tuning with partners like OpenPipe and Autonomi, though additional providers are expected in the future.
Cost tracking is a cornerstone of Helicone’s functionality, offering transparency into spending across providers. The platform automatically detects and applies pricing for models like GPT-5 variants, Claude Opus 4.1, and Grok 4, ensuring accurate analytics. Users can compare costs across providers and monitor usage patterns by geographic location, aiding in budget optimization and resource planning.
Unified AI Gateway
Helicone’s AI Gateway serves as a single entry point for accessing over 100 LLM models through a unified OpenAI-compatible API. This eliminates the need for separate integrations with each provider, simplifying development and reducing API key management complexity. The gateway supports intelligent routing, automatic failovers, and built-in observability, making it ideal for production environments.
Observability & Tracing
The platform provides end-to-end tracing for LLM requests, allowing developers to inspect traces, sessions, and agent workflows in real time. Key metrics such as cost, latency, and quality are tracked and visualized in the dashboard. Users can export data to PostHog for custom analytics, enabling deeper insights into application performance.
Cost & Latency Tracking
Helicone offers granular cost tracking, including support for models like GPT-4o Search, Mistral variants, and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.1. The system automatically calculates costs for open-source models (e.g., GPT-OSS) across providers like Fireworks and OpenRouter.
Prompt Management
Developers can version, test, and deploy prompts without code changes using Helicone’s prompt management system. Prompts are saved with typed variables and can be referenced by ID in API calls. The playground allows for real-time experimentation with different models and parameters, accelerating iteration cycles.
Self-Hosting & Compliance
For organizations with strict security requirements, Helicone supports self-hosting via Docker or Helm. This ensures data sovereignty and protection of intellectual property, as all logs and analytics remain within the user’s infrastructure. The platform is SOC 2 and GDPR compliant, making it suitable for enterprise deployments.
Integrations & Extensibility
Helicone integrates with major LLM frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex) and inference providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq). It also supports asynchronous logging via OpenLLMetry and provides SDKs for TypeScript, Python, and Go. The platform’s extensibility allows for custom integrations, such as logging responses from the OpenAI Responses API.
Playground & Rapid Iteration
The Helicone Playground enables developers to test prompts, sessions, and traces interactively. Features like reasoning effort controls (minimal, low, medium, high) and verbosity settings for GPT-5 models allow for fine-grained experimentation. The playground is tightly integrated with the dashboard, ensuring that changes can be deployed instantly without redeploying code.
Enterprise-Grade Features
Helicone includes enterprise-ready features such as automatic failovers, smart load balancing, and session-level metrics. The platform supports high-volume LLM traffic and provides tools for geographic analytics, helping teams understand global usage patterns. Additionally, the Helm chart offers production-ready deployment for large-scale environments.
