Flyte: Kubernetes-Native Orchestration for AI and ML Workflows
Flyte is an open-source, Kubernetes-native orchestration platform designed specifically for data, machine learning, and AI workflows. Developed initially at Lyft and later incubated under the Linux Foundation AI & Data, Flyte enables strongly typed, versioned, and reproducible tasks. It is licensed under the permissive Apache 2.0 license and is written in Go, ensuring compatibility with modern cloud-native environments. Union.ai provides a managed edition of Flyte for enterprise-grade deployments.
Flyte 2, the latest major release, is now generally available and introduces significant improvements in workflow orchestration, developer experience, and scalability. It is designed to handle complex AI pipelines, including model training, inference, and agentic workflows, while ensuring resilience against infrastructure failures such as out-of-memory (OOM) errors, container preemptions, and GPU disconnections.
The platform supports dynamic workflows that branch, loop, and provision resources on demand, making it suitable for both traditional ML pipelines and emerging AI applications like autonomous agents. Flyte 2 achieves this without requiring domain-specific languages (DSLs) or YAML configurations, allowing developers to author workflows in pure Python.
How It Works
These tasks are executed within containers, managed by Kubernetes, ensuring isolation and reproducibility. The platform includes a Python SDK for defining tasks and workflows, a command-line interface (CLI) for execution and management, and a backend infrastructure for orchestration and state management.
Key components of Flyte include the TaskEnvironment, which groups configurations for tasks such as container images, dependencies, and resource requirements; the Flyte CLI, which interacts with the backend to execute workflows; and the Flyte UI, which provides visibility into workflow executions, logs, and metrics. The backend, while open-source, is currently in development for Flyte 2, with Union.ai offering a production-ready alternative for enterprise users.
Flyte’s architecture is designed for scalability and fault tolerance. Workflows are broken down into individual tasks that can be executed in parallel, with automatic retries and resumption from failure points. Additionally, Flyte supports dynamic resource allocation, allowing infrastructure to scale up or down based on workload demands.
For local development, Flyte provides a Devbox, a lightweight Kubernetes cluster that runs on a user’s machine via Docker. This allows developers to test workflows in an environment that closely mimics production, complete with a UI for monitoring executions. The Devbox can also be deployed in GitHub Codespaces for a browser-based experience. GPU support is available for tasks requiring accelerated computing, though it is limited to NVIDIA-enabled hosts.
Use Cases
- Protein Design: Cradle leverages Flyte to streamline ML workflows for protein design, enabling rapid experimentation and iteration.
- Discovery employs Flyte to optimize ML workflow delivery, reducing costs and improving efficiency in content production pipelines.
- AI Delivery: Kineo uses Flyte to accelerate AI project delivery while cutting orchestration costs, demonstrating its effectiveness in enterprise environments.
- Environmental Monitoring: MethaneSAT utilizes Flyte to orchestrate global methane reduction initiatives, processing satellite data and running AI models to identify emission sources.
Its ability to integrate with existing tools and platforms, such as Spark, BigQuery, PyTorch, and Ray, further extends its applicability across different domains.
Key Features and Capabilities
- Pure Python Workflows: Developers define workflows using Python decorators and functions, eliminating the need for DSLs or complex YAML configurations. This reduces the learning curve and accelerates development.
- Self-Healing Workflows: Flyte automatically recovers from infrastructure failures, such as OOM kills, preempted nodes, or lost GPU resources. This ensures workflows continue executing without manual intervention, improving reliability in production environments.
- Dynamic Execution: Workflows can branch, loop, and make runtime decisions, making Flyte suitable for agentic systems and dynamic pipelines.
- Scalability: Flyte supports the execution of thousands of parallel tasks and distributed jobs without requiring code changes. It dynamically scales infrastructure to match workload demands, optimizing resource utilization.
- Integration Ecosystem: Flyte integrates with major data and ML tools, including Spark for distributed processing, BigQuery and Snowflake for data querying, and PyTorch and Ray for distributed training and hyperparameter tuning.
- Experiment and Inference Tracking: Flyte provides built-in support for tracking experiments and inference results, enabling better observability and reproducibility in AI workflows.
- Developer Experience: Flyte emphasizes developer productivity with features like the Devbox for local testing, a rich CLI for workflow management, and a TUI for enhanced local development. The platform also includes comprehensive documentation, SDK references, and community support channels.
The platform’s focus on infrastructure awareness and resilience sets it apart from other orchestration tools. By automatically handling failures and optimizing resource usage, Flyte reduces operational overhead and enables teams to focus on building and iterating on AI models rather than managing infrastructure.
